Site Visit –
Esholt Sewage Treatment Works (Yorkshire Water)
Monday 15th November

Esholt is one of Yorkshire Water’s largest sites, serving a population equivalent of 520,000 in Bradford, northern Leeds and surrounding districts.  Yorkshire Water Innovation Delivery is progressing with two significant Development project on this site both related to energy.

Cellruptor is a low technology, capital efficient pre-digestion sludge treatment system.  YW has been
involved in its development for several years.  Esholt is the site where a fullscale plant will be fully
evaluated against stretching enhanced gas yield targets, financially supported by Innovation Delivery
and the Carbon Trust.  The plant is due for completion in September followed by a six week evaluation period.

The 1500 tds/yr Intervate Pyrolysis process is now commissioned and evaluation of three fuel streams is underway (phyto-conditioned sludge, inlet works screenings and third party wastes to augment any fuel quality shortfalls).  This evaluation will continue for up to 18months where irrefutable proof of the technology, operational costs and energy yield from the prescribed fuel types will be recorded.  Properties of the resultant bio-char will be evaluated and forward uses established.
